Its name comes from the peculiar shape of the flower, which looks like a little empty bag – according to the myth, Minerva turned a young boy into this plant because he had fallen asleep instead of catching flies for her owls and the calyx represents the empty bag that the boy did not fill. Rather than for the flower, the plant is very popular as a foraging herb, as the young shoots are used as vegetables in many traditional recipes, thanks to their unique, sweet, green-peas–like taste. In Italy, picking the young leaves to make omelettes and risotto is a spring tradition.
